The Origins of Tibetan Incense
Tibetan incense, with its mysterious and ancient fragrance, dates back to the 7th century during the Tubo Dynasty. King Songtsen Gampo, a devout Buddhist, commissioned his minister, Thonmi Sambhota, to create a special incense based on Tibetan medicine. This incense was designed to honor two Buddha statues brought from China and Nepal. Over time, Tibetan incense spread across the snowy plateau and became an important treasure for Buddhist worship, spiritual purification, and health. In 2008, the art of Tibetan incense-making was officially recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, and this ancient craft remains an iconic representation of Tibetan culture.

The History of Damora Tibetan Incense
In 1671, the first generation of Damora Tibetan Incense was created by Desi Sangye Gyatso, a Tibetan leader who deeply understood Buddhist teachings and Tibetan medicine. He skillfully blended traditional incense-making with Tibetan herbal medicine, introducing various precious herbs like:
- Nutmeg: Strengthens the heart and calms the mind.
- Bamboo Pith: Clears the lungs.
- Clove: Nourishes the liver and relieves stress.
- Cardamom: Supports kidney health.
- Amomum: Aids digestion.
- These herbs, along with rare natural plants such as Ganden Kanpa, Hua Ma, and Zhiyang Ge (found at altitudes above 13,000 feet), are carefully processed to create the first Damora incense.
For 19 generations, the art of Damora incense-making has been passed down, constantly refined and innovated. Today, Damora Tibetan Incense is used for physical healing, spiritual practice, environmental purification, and honoring ancient wisdom.

The Craft of Damora Tibetan Incense
Each stick of Damora Tibetan Incense is a product of deep connection between the artisans and nature. The incense-making process is treated as a sacred ritual:
- It involves 68 precise steps.
- 37 natural ingredients are used, all free of chemicals and artificial additives.
- Handcrafted with traditional methods to ensure each stick remains pure and natural, like a gift from the earth.
The 18th-generation master of Damora Tibetan Incense, Master Sangzhu, once said, “To master the art of incense-making, one must have a compassionate heart. A pure heart leads to pure actions, and clarity of mind brings clarity of vision.” Each incense maker must purify themselves by abstaining from meat for one month and calming their mind. This ensures they are in the clearest and most mindful state to sense the energy and essence of the ingredients. They faithfully follow the teachings of their ancestors: “Only with compassion can true incense be made.”This dedication has preserved the Damora tradition for over 300 years.
